As the holidays approach, many households in Orange County are planning family gatherings and favorite meals. Yet for thousands of local families, the question isn’t what to serve; it’s whether there will be enough to eat at all.
Food insecurity remains one of the most pressing issues in our region. According to recent data from Feeding America, roughly one in ten people in Orange County struggles to access enough nutritious food. For parents working multiple jobs, seniors on fixed incomes, and individuals coping with medical or housing challenges, the rising cost of groceries has made daily life increasingly difficult.
The impact goes far beyond empty pantries. Food insecurity affects children’s learning, adult health, and emotional well-being. Many families find themselves making impossible choices; paying for medication instead of meals, or stretching small budgets by skipping food altogether.
Community organizations, food pantries, and volunteers across the Hudson Valley continue to work quietly to fill these gaps. Their efforts range from weekly food distributions to emergency deliveries and holiday meal programs that provide not just nourishment, but a reminder that no one in this community is forgotten.
At the Hudson Valley Basket Brigade, we see the difference that simple acts of kindness can make; a bag of groceries, a check-in call, a neighbor willing to help. Each small effort strengthens the web of support that holds our community together.
If you or someone you know is facing food insecurity in Orange County, several local resources can help:
-
HONOR Food Pantry (Middletown) – Offers food assistance and other supportive services.
-
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County – Provides nutrition education and connects families with local programs.
-
Orange County Office for the Aging – Provides meal programs for seniors throughout the county.
Food insecurity can’t be solved by one organization or one season of giving. It takes all of us, working together year-round, to ensure our neighbors have what they need. As we enter the holiday months, it’s a good time to look around and ask how we can each play a small part in that effort.
